Donald A. Smith Jr.President & CEO Donald A. Smith Jr. is a 33-year veteran of the insurance industry and a former deputy secretary within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Labor and Industry, and joined SCF Arizona on June 1, 2000. Smith spent 20 years in private industry at New York-based insurer Continental, where he began his career. From 1990 until joining the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, he was vice president and director for the company’s Mid-Atlantic region. Smith is a 1974 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and carries the designation of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter. He earned his law degree in May 2000 from Widener University School of Law in Harrisburg, Pa., and was admitted to the Arizona Bar in May 2001. From 2004-2006, Smith served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Grand Canyon Chapter of the American Red Cross, and he was named the organization’s “Humanitarian of the Year” in 2008. As a business and insurance industry leader, Smith serves on the boards of the National Council on Compensation Insurance and the American Association of State Compensation Insurance Funds. Smith is also a member of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.
Ann ChristensenExecutive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Ann Christensen has more than 20 years’ experience in retail financial services. She came to SCF from RG Capital where she served in a similar position. Before that she was president of iNation, a best practices customer relationship management firm. She also served as senior vice president of business development with Charles Schwab & Co. Before coming to Arizona, Christensen was executive vice president of retail desktop strategy and customer and sales management for FleetBoston Financial Corporation. Christensen earned her MBA from Boston University and has a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of New Hampshire.
Rick DeGrawSenior Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer Rick DeGraw came to SCF Arizona in February 2006 to create and oversee the Communications & Public Affairs Division, after spending 14 years as the director of marketing and communications for the Maricopa Community Colleges. DeGraw worked as a marketing consultant with SCF beginning in May 2004. A former Arizona Senate staff member, DeGraw founded his own business, Roots Development, where he provided political and public service consulting. He has participated in nearly 400 candidate or issue-oriented campaigns. DeGraw is also a former Arizona State University faculty member. He has a master’s degree in divinity from Princeton University and a master’s degree in social work from Rutgers University.
Brent NelsonSenior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer Brent Nelson has more than 25 years of experience within insurance and financial services. Prior to joining SCF, Nelson held various executive financial positions at Kansas City Life Insurance Company, Mass Mutual Financial Group, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and American General Corporation. Nelson is a certified public accountant, Chartered Life Underwriter, fellow in the Life Management Institute and NASD registered representative. His professional memberships include the American Institute of CPAs, Society of Financial Service Professionals and the Insurance Accounting and Systems Association. Nelson holds a master’s degree in accounting and a Bachelor of Science in business management–finance, both from Brigham Young University.
Paula KorosoSenior Vice President, Claims Services Paula Koroso began her career with SCF Arizona in 1981 as a claims representative. She transferred to marketing in 1982 and three years later was promoted to field service supervisor. In 1991 Koroso was promoted to Glendale district manager and moved again in 1994 as manager of the Phoenix District Office and Central Region. In 1997 she was promoted once again to claims manager. In December 1998, Koroso was appointed to the position of vice president of the Account Services Division, overseeing the provision of policyholder services of SCF’s offices in Flagstaff, Lake Havasu City, Phoenix, Prescott, Show Low, Tucson and Yuma. In February 2005, Koroso began oversight of sales and marketing, underwriting, premium auditing and loss control. In July 2007, Koroso was named senior vice president, Claims Services. Koroso earned her CPCU designation in January 2005 and her MBA in 2007.
Rick JonesSenior Vice President, Chief Sales & Business Development Officer, President of all SCF Subsidiaries Rick Jones has 30 years experience within the insurance industry, which began in risk management for a division of Teledyne. Prior to joining SCF in 2006 as director of Sales & Marketing, Jones served as senior vice president of compliance and assistant secretary for CNA National Warranty Corp. In 1982, Jones opened the Arizona branch office of EBI Insurance Companies (aka Orion Group), and in 1986 moved to Corroon & Black (now Willis of Arizona) as vice president of marketing. Jones’ professional designations include CPCU, ARM and AFIP. He is a licensed insurance agent in 47 states and in Canada, is past president of the Central Arizona Chapter of CPCU and serves as a committee member for the Society of CPCU, Regulation and Legislative Section. |
